MURPHYSBORO – Two people have been sentenced in Jackson County to the Illinois Department of Corrections for armed robbery in connection with a vehicular hijacksin that happened in May of this year.

Jackson County State’s Attorney Joseph Cervantez says on May 5, Carbondale Police responded to reports of an armed robbery near 900 E. Grand Ave. The victims were approached by two men for a ride home that night and were robbed of personal items including phones, wallets, jewelry, cash and their car. The two drove off in the victim’s car, and later abandoned it on a nearby street. The victims walked back to their friend’s house to call for help. The suspects were identified as 34-year-old Jamir J. Jordan of Chicago, and 29-year-old Dominique J. Smith of Carbondale.

Jordan was sentenced to 18 years in prison after pleading guilty to Armed Robbery (Class X Felony). Jordan’s sentence will be followed by a one year period of Mandatory Supervised Release.

Smith was sentenced to 14 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to Aggravated Robbery (Class 1 Felony) and Vehicular Hijacking (Class 1 Felony). Smith’s sentence will be followed by a one year period of Mandatory Supervised Release.

The Carbondale Police Department conducted the investigation with assistance from the Illinois State Police and the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Office. State’s Attorney Joseph A. Cervantez is responsible for the prosecution of both Jamir Jordan and Dominique Smith.

Cervantez explained that “violent crimes like this are extremely personal and don’t just claim the immediate victims but have a chilling effect on the entire community. Offenders will be held accountable in Jackson County.”
