MARION – A two-vehicle fatal crash happened Wednesday morning on Route 37 south of Marion.
According to a preliminary report from Illinois State Police, two individuals were pronounced dead at the the scene by the Williamson County Coroner, and another was flown to a regional hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Officials said officers responded to the scene around 9:20 a.m. The first vehicle involved was traveling north on Route 37 and for unknown reasons, crossed into the southbound lane and struck the front of a second vehicle.
The driver and passenger of the first vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, the driver of the second vehicle was airlifted.
Route 37 was closed for four hours and traffic was rerouted.
ISP said the situation is an open and on-going investigation.
