New Law Would Ensure Consumers More Options for Repairs

(IOCI RADIO) – New legislation in the Illinois House would ensure consumers more options when it comes to getting everything from cell phones to tractors repaired.

The measure, called The Right to Repair Act, would require manufacturers to provide replacement parts, manuals and diagnostic tools to independent repair shops and product owners at fair prices. At a House hearing, Donovan Griffith with the Illinois Manufacturer’s Association testified against the proposal, calling it “too broad” and could be used to make dangerous modifications to a wide range of products.

Abe Scarr, director of the Illinois Public Interest Research Group, said “bottom line, people just want to fix their stuff.”
