SPRINGFIELD – A new proposal in Springfield could ban state-mandated costs that result in local property tax hikes.
House Bill 5 would invalidate any new Illinois law that imposes an unfunded task for local municipalities to undertake unless the state pays for it.
Illinois Municipal League President Brad Cole said Illinois lawmakers make local government pay for their unfunded mandates all of the time. He claimed the only way to pay for the unfunded mandates are with property tax hikes or other fees that make it more expensive to live and do business in a city.
Illinois has some of the highest property tax rates in the nation.
