Grayville Man Gets 30 Years for March 2020 Stabbing

CARMI – A Grayville man was sentenced Thursday in White County to the Illinois Department of Corrections on two battery charges stemming from a March 2020 incident in Grayville.

White County State’s Attorney Denton Aud said 46-year-old Sanjay Lewis will spend 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections with four years of supervised release for aggravated domestic battery and 10 years in IDOC with one year of mandatory supervised release for aggravated battery.

The two sentences between the two offenses will also run concurrently. Lewis will not be eligible for parole until he is 71 years old.

Aud said Lewis pled guilty on October 7, 2020 to the offenses of aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery with a sentencing hearing set to begin on Jan. 25, 2021. In pleading guilty, Lewis admitted that he had stabbed his girlfriend and another female individual multiple times with a knife in Grayville on March 17, 2020.

The Grayville Police Department was the investigating agency, with assistance from Illinois State Police, the White County Sheriff’s Department, the Carmi Police Department and the Edwards County Sheriff’s Department.
