MURPHYSBORO – The Murphysboro City Council Thursday night approved a mask ordinance within the city to go into effect Sunday, Aug. 23.
The ordinance was introduced at the special meeting, requiring those who are able to wear a face covering while “inside places of public accommodation” or using public transportation, such as a bus. The document defines a face covering as, “a covering that fully covers a person’s nose and mask” i.e. a cloth face mask, surgical mask, towels, scarves, and bandanas.
Those with a medical condition and children under the age of two are exempt from wearing a mask. Restaurant patrons are not required to wear a face covering while eating.
The ordinance will allow for a warning the first time a person is found in violation of the rule. Future offenses would include up to a $100 fine.
