Three Dead After Head-On Collision Sunday in Pope County

POPE COUNTY – Illinois State Police (ISP) Tuesday morning released the names of the three people killed in an early Sunday morning crash on Route 34 about a mile north of Williams Hill Rd. in Pope County.

ISP said the victims were 27-year-old David A. Wasson of Harrisburg, 39-year-old Jarret M. Bencie of Marion and 42-year-old Kenny N. Webb of Marion.

Wasson was driving the 2007 Dodge Charger which crossed the center line and struck the 2000 Lincoln Limousine head-on driven by Bencie.

When authorities arrived, the Charger was fully engulfed in flames. Wasson and Bencie died at the scene. Webb was a passenger in the limo. The additional eight passengers were taken to area hospitals due to injuries.

The investigation into the crash continues.

POPE COUNTY – Three people died in a head-on collision on Route 34 in Pope County Sunday.

According to Illinois State Police, the fatal crash occurred about a mile north of Williams Rd. An investigation showed a 2007 Dodge Charger crossed the center line and struck a 2000 Lincoln Limousine head-on. When authorities arrived, the Charger was fully engulfed in flames. Both the driver of the Charger and the Limousine, died at the scene. One of the nine passengers in the Limousine died at an area hospital.

The additional eight passengers were taken to area hospitals; their conditions are currently unknown. The names of those killed have not yet been released.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
