Williamson County Sheriff Warning of Phone Scam Using Staff Names

MARION – Williamson County Sheriff Bennie Vick is warning the public about another scam working in the area.

This scam uses the names of specific police departments, and attempts to use names of specific deputies or officers.

In the past week, the sheriff’s office has received reports from two intended victims of this scam, registered sex offenders. They reported a caller contacting them, identifying himself as a part of the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, and ordering them to visit to the sheriff’s office to update their DNA profiles. The caller then said the victims could waive the requirement if they paid an amount of cash over the telephone.

In one instance, the caller attempted to identify himself using a current sheriff’s office detective’s name.

Vick said there is no current requirement for registered sex offenders to update their DNA Profile, adding that any legitimate law enforcement agency will not demand a cash payment over the telephone for any reason.
