Marion – An investigation is underway after the town square in Marion was shut down for several hours Monday morning after a suspicious package was found outside of city hall. According to a release from the city, at approximately 8:45 a.m. Monday morning city staff noticed a suspicious package outside City Hall. Marion Police and Fire Departments were notified, and the Illinois Secretary of State Police’s Hazardous Device Unit was dispatched. Marion Police Department evacuated the square while the package was being investigated. At approximately 11:00 a.m. authorities cleared the package as a threat. Regular business resumed around the square, including City Hall, at 11:15 a.m. The Marion Police Department is investigating the incident and more information will be released as it becomes available.
