Vocalist/guitarist Benjamin Gibbard described the song in a statement:
“Kids in ’99” is a tribute to the three children who died in 1999 from the Olympic Pipeline explosion in Bellingham, Washington. The Olympic Pipeline explosion in 1999 was a tragedy that really affected me while we were living in Bellingham. After all these years I felt it was worthy of its own folk song.”
The Blue EP is out Sept. 6.
