The Australian-born musician Mallrat, known for “Groceries,” has released a new song and video, “Charlie,” from her duly-announced EP Driving Music, due Sept. 6.
The song is named after Mallrat’s golden Labrador, with the video capturing the nostalgia the song’s lyrics pour out. In an interview with Paper Magazine, she discussing the memories of her parents included in the lyrics, describing that part of the songwriting process as “scary.”
“It’s more just because the songs that I really care about, not even mine necessarily but other people’s,” she said. “I think having a song that steals people, you have to be very honest and sometimes that means going into detail about things that are too scary to talk about. So you just put them in a song. I wanted to write a song that would mean something.”
Mallrat will begin touring this fall, stopping by Chicago’s Subterranean Sept. 18.
